History
The town of Kapuskasing (originally known as MacPherson until 1917) was established along the banks of the Kapuskasing River at its junction with the newly completed National Transcontinental Railway in 1911 and the awarding of local timber and hydro development leases for the region. The timber leases would not be put into use for nearly 10 years, when the rights were eventually sold to Kimberly-Clark. In the interim period between 1911 and 1920 little development occurred in the area as the railway was at this time the only means of access to this remote Northern Community. During the first world war an internment camp was established on what is presently the grounds of the municipal airport, to house more than 1,300 prisoners of war and immigrants from enemy countries. The detainees were put to work clearing land for an experimental farm established by the government to explore farming possibilities in the region. Attempts after the end of WWI to setup veterans with farms in the area was unsuccessful due the compounding factors of weather, remoteness and the failure to begin development of the promised wood pulp mill.
In 1920 Kimberly-Clark, having purchased the timber leases in the area immediately began development of a pulp mill. Over the coming years the town and neighboring communities grew rapidly in size and wealth. Efforts to explore the farming possibilities in the region were largely abandoned by both aspiring farmers and the government as the local economy increasingly revolved around the pulp wood industry and its needs. In 1928 the mill became the single paper source for the printing of the New York Times. The mill has continued to be in operation since despite changes in ownership over the years.
