History

Smooth Rock Falls Heritage Centre/Museum

Originally settled in 1916, the town was incorporated in 1929. Historically the towns location on the Mattagami River and the rich Boreal Forests of Northeastern Ontario has made it a centre for logging and hydroelectric power generation.

Location

The town of Smooth Rock Falls is located at the junction of the Transcanada Highway 11 and the Mattagami River. The township covers approximately 200.10 km² with a population density of 6.6 people for every km²compared to that of Toronto : 4149.5 persons per km², Calgary 2,111 persons per km2, and Peterbourgh, Ontario with 1525.7 persons per km2.

Smooth Rock Falls is situated along Highway 11, part of the Trans-Canada Highway linking Eastern and Western Canada. The Ontario Northland Railway also runs through the community providing potential access to freight transportation services linking Northeastern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec over a rail system that spans from Moosonee to North Bay, and from Calstock to Rouyn Noranda, Quebec, over 700 miles of rail line. National Shipping is available via their connections in Hearst, Rouyn Noranda and North Bay.

Smooth Rock Falls is centrally located to the communities of Cochrane(59 km East), Kapuskasing(65 km West) on Highway 11 and Timmins (102 km South) via Highway 655 offer access to Airports. It is possible to get from Smooth Rock Falls to downtown Toronto in less than 3 hours via Porter Airlines at Timmins Airport which offers twice daily connections to Downtown Toronto Billy Bishop Airport.

Ontario Northland Bus Service operates a daily service through the community traveling both west to Hearst, and East to connections in Timmins, North Bay, Sudbury, Toronto and beyond.
